Carbon Footprint - Real or just hype

Hi I've recently launched a unique video over the internet communication product and a number of customers have said this will aid their carbon footprint. We are now looking at a reward system for our customers guaged against our product's saving on carbon footprints. My problem is that I can't find a model for assement of units within a carbon footprint.
