Santa Fe OpenCoffee for July will explore social businesses, how to ‘do well by doing good’ and what is needed to support Social Entrepreneurship in New Mexico. How do these entrepreneurs capitalize a social businesses/social enterprise and get the money they need in New Mexico? These commercial enterprises demonstrate how to generate returns, making money while actively pursuing social, environmental and/or community objectives – the so called, “triple bottom line”. These efforts require the same entrepreneurial grit that make startups vital and dynamic. Like Google, Twitter and Etsy, they have the potential to change the world.

We will have a wide-ranging discussion with a panel of social businesses in the Santa Fe area that will explore how to build a healthy eco-system for good works and social entrepreneurship.

The panel will be led by Drew Tulchin of Social Enterprise Associates, the state’s first B Corporation. Drew is a leading voice in New Mexico on social enterprises. His consulting efforts have led clients to raise more than $100 million for mission-driven, return-generating enterprises. Drew’s firm, Social Enterprise Associates is a consulting firm offering business acumen, managerial experience, financing opportunities, and practical research to business and community efforts seeking social good.

The panel will include David Sellers and Tina Garcia-Shams of The Street Food Institute, and Bob Kreger of Rain Vessels

The Street Food Institute (SFI) is an entrepreneur-focused culinary program dedicated to inspiring the success of small, local businesses in New Mexico. They work with young adults and emerging culinary students and practitioners to develop the business and technical skills to realize their entrepreneurial dreams.
SFI students begin with hands-on training at SFI Food Trucks, where they learn how to make delicious and healthy food using sustainable business practices. Students are then encouraged to employ their skills in the community to innovate their own small businesses that provide more choices for nourishing, affordable local food.

By raising the bar for street food, developing local culinarians, and building a robust and active community around local food, SFI seeks to make New Mexico a culinary destination.

RainVessels, believes water is a public good, not a commodity. In the US, households and businesses alike flush millions of gallons of potable water down the drain every year. This loss affects our wallets as well as the health of our communities. Rain catchment can mitigate this loss and RainVessels can help. Their patent-pending concept represents a transformational advance in water storage. Rain Vessel’s customized rainwater catchment and hand painted water containers are scalable, insulated for year-round use and finished to blend seamlessly with any architectural style.
